Guest Stuby Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 Hi All - sorry but I am a bit new to this lark. I have a 2001 Galaxy Ghia 2.3 - petrol. From what I can tell in the handbook, it has most of the "bells & whistles". Therefore do I need to check when the brake pads are due for renewal, or will the all singing all dancing on board computer tell me ? The book tells you that the brake system warning light will come on if there is a problem with the brake system but it does not say if this includes if the pads are too low. I took the front wheels of yesterday and had a look and the pads are down to about 5 mm so I suppose need replacing. However I expected to see somewires coming from the pad area if sensors where built in, but could not see them. I am NOT that techincially minded, and anyway, cannot believe my car has everything else, but not pad wear senses like some of you seem to have. I would love to know the answer. That's about it. Oh, one other thing. Is it right that you cannot get a Haynes Manual for a Galaxy younger than W reg. If so, where can I get a manual that does cover it, to stop me asking these sort of questions ! Thanks everyone Stuby Quote
NikpV Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 it has sensors (provided they have been connected properly - no reason to think not) it will say "check brake pads" on the display Quote

Thanks everyone Stuby Hi Stuby Just a point, if there are some problems with the wires, then sometimes they are cut off, but you will find that only one pad of each side will have a wire,so one pad could were down and not show on the dash. But you mention that it is down to 5mm then I would change them, as leave it any longer and you might end up having to replace the discs as well. Radiotwo Quote
Grumpy Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 I seem to recall on my car, only 1 pad on each offside end (if you see what I mean) has a sensor wire. The system assumes that all pads will wear evenly, which they probably will unless there is a fault. The "Check Brake Pads" warning on the dash is very useful. Unless the dash is faulty that is. But I am not going into that one again. Quote

Dave-G Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) The warning comes on at about "half pad", designed to persuade you to get them done way before the next service which would find them low. That warning gets annoying after a while and gets "them" into your pockets again. In the good old days owners would just cut the wires and hey presto - no more warning. They soon put a stop to that by changing the wiring to NEED the complete circuit. We have to remember that there will be some who know zilch about their cars and always use a garage for everything, and thats before we even think about the blame culture aspects. This info is given to help "able and active" DIY'ers, IE those who would be astute enough to know that "metal to metal graunching" sound is the higher part of the rim of the disc chaffing the pad base. ... so unless you pull back the sleeving and remove some insulation from each wire and twist /solder them together you will just have to tolerate the warning or change the pads.
